Agricultural Midwest (https://archive.org/details/AgriculturalMidwest1976#). Several midwestern farm families describe in their own words what it’s like to live on a family farm and make a living in agriculture. We also get to spend a little time at a grain elevator, a cereal making plant, and the Chicago Board of Trade, where farm commodities are bought and sold on a busy trading floor (Buy corn! Sell beans! No, buy beans! No! SELL! NO!…sorry). This part of the US is where I was born, raised, and still live, though I’m a city gal myself. But this is all very familiar territory to me, because even in urban Omaha, you never get far away from the influence of agriculture. This is like a holiday visit to my in-laws, who live in rural Nebraska (I even have a sister-in-law and brother-in-law who run their own family farm). This is a fairly well-made and realistic film. You get a sense that the people in it are real and are talking spontaneously in their own words, all with a charming rural accent. I bet they eat dinner at noon and everything. A real slice of life with lots of historical interest.
Ratings: Camp/Humor Value: ** (slightly more if you live here). Weirdness: BOMB (these people are hyper-ordinary). Historical Interest: ****. Overall Rating: ***.
